Overcoming Fine-Particle Recovery & Water Management Challenges Through Advanced Nanobubble Technology

Mining and mineral-processing operations interact with large volumes of water throughout the ore crushing, grinding, beneficiation, flotation, washing, dewatering, and tailings-handling stages. These water streams contain high concentrations of suspended solids, fine mineral particles, dissolved metals, hydrocarbons, residual reagents, and other process-specific contaminants. As industries increasingly recycle process water to reduce freshwater consumption, the accumulation of dissolved and suspended contaminants can progressively alter water chemistry and influence slurry behaviour, flotation performance, downstream separation, and overall process stability. Efficient management of these water streams is therefore critical not only for mineral recovery and process-water recycling, but also for tailings management, water conservation, and environmental compliance.

At the same time, mining operations are under continuous pressure to increase recovery, manage increasingly complex ore profiles, optimize reagent utilization, improve process kinetics, and extract greater value from every tonne of ore processed. As ore grades decline and mineral liberation shifts towards finer particle sizes, fine and ultrafine mineral recovery becomes increasingly important. Conventional flotation can become progressively less effective in this size range because fine particles have lower probabilities of effective bubble–particle collision and attachment, increasing the potential for valuable minerals to report to tailings and reducing overall recovery.

These limitations are not necessarily a consequence of inadequate chemistry or insufficient process effort. In many cases, they are linked to the fundamental efficiency of gas–liquid interaction, particle–bubble contact, mineral-surface conditioning, reagent interaction, and slurry behaviour. Improving these interactions can therefore provide an opportunity to intensify existing mineral-processing operations without fundamentally changing the overall process philosophy.

NanoCav® Nanobubble Technology by Prasinos addresses these process limitations through two complementary mechanisms. First, the generation of fine nanobubbles increases the available gas–liquid interfacial area and provides greater opportunity for interaction with fine and ultrafine mineral particles, supporting improved bubble–particle collision and attachment. Second, the hydrodynamic cavitation environment can assist in conditioning mineral surfaces by disrupting surface films and influencing the surface conditions required for effective collector interaction. Together, these effects improve the interaction between bubbles, mineral particles, and reagents, providing a process-intensification approach for challenging fine-particle recovery. Beyond mineral flotation, NanoCav® can be engineered for process-water conditioning, fine-particle separation, tailings-water clarification, oxygenation, and selected mining wastewater applications, depending on the mineral characteristics, water chemistry, process configuration, and specific treatment objective.
